I know this is out of the ordinary but I couldn’t resist posting some absolutely glamorous pictures of King Willem-Alexander‘s Investiture Ceremony.  I didn’t know who the heck he was but a quick Google search showed that he was the Dutch prince of the Netherlands, who became king yesterday as his mother, Queen Beatrix abdicated the throne.  Ofcourse, full royal ball and dinners were in order!  And there’s nothing like a royal ball to showcase some royal fashion.  I think I loved the elegant style of Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned of Qatar the most (she’s the one in the last two pictures).

Designer duds or simply a dud?  In this case, I have to say that Sonam looks elegant in Armani Prive, paired with simple black sandals.  The earrings are a bit out of place although I understand the inclination to pair something Indian, but just not for this outfit.

Aside from the Oscars and Cannes, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala in New York City is one that I eagerly look forward to for the theme and what the stars will wear.  This year’s theme was “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”, allowing Hollywood stars to play dress-up, donning everything from dark lipstick to studded chokers to fun faux-hawks.  Emma Watson wore a custom Prabal Gurung cutout black silk-crepe dress with T-strap pumps and a mismatched set of earrings, including a diamond and black enamel dart pendant earring by Fred Leighton.  Question is, was she punk enough?

A banging body she may have but she certainly doesn’t know how to dress is.  Speaking of Bipasha’s casual style of course   A crocheted vest thrown over a tight bandage dress, doesn’t an outfit make.  Add hideous shoes to that and it’s a just head-scratchingly weird outfit.  Speaking of strange outfits, what the heck is Kareena wearing?  I understand the need for comfort but I refuse to walk out in my pjs to watch a movie.  At least sister Karishma and Saif look spot on.  Saif looks seriously cool in his causal avatar.

In vibrant blues and greens, Freida attended the Maiyet Varanasi Silk Capsule Collection Private Dinner hosted By Barney’s at Consulate General Of India in New York City.  The ensemble is head-to-toe Maiyet Spring 2013 collection.  Where fashion novices would have chosen a matchy-matchy heel, I’m glad she went with a subdued pair of heels to let the outfit stand out.

Another one to take the traditional route at ‘The Great Gatsby’ premiere was Sonam.  She wore another Anamika Khanna saree and embellished (heavily) jacket with a nose ring by her mom.  Again, is it costume-y or just right?

While Sonam and Vidya went traditional Indianwear, our other two Bollywood beauties, Freida and Mallika went the western route.  Can’t say that I’m impressed after seeing the spectacle of Vidya and Sonam; these just look meh in comparison.

Belle of the ball, Sonam can be crowned.  The night of the Cannes Gala dinner, she wore a fabulous pink Elie Saab gown (a favorite designer of hers) with shoes and clutch to match.  At the ‘Jeune & Jolie’ premiere, she wore a custom-made Dolce and Gabbana gown with a Sunita Kapoor (her mum) necklace.  I think the necklace was an unnecessary addition but even still, she looked great!

Kudos to Freida for picking a new India designer to wear on the international stage and with such elegance.  She wore a custom made Sanchita design accessorized with Daniel Swarovski’s bronze crystal and pearl Oscar box clutch.  Retro hair and makeup finished out the look.  Love!

After the great run she’s been having, Sonam unfortunately pulled a tacky number, a tacky Shehla Khan couture lehenga to be more specific.  With all that’s going on with that lengha, the beautiful Chopard necklace that she was required to wear (since it was a Chopard party) got lost in translation.  The clutch on the other hand, stuck out like a sore thumb!

On the one hand, Vidya looks regal.  On the other hand, people would think she’s a lovely lady, probably a mom of two, around say age 40ish.  The sarees and blouses she’s chosen have aged her quite a bit.  It’s only day two and I’m already bored of seeing the same look.  It would be surprising if she, on the last day of Cannes, showed up in a graceful gown, flowing tresses, and very little jewelry.  That blue necklace, while lovely, looks cheap and doesn’t add that bit of spunk she might have been going for.

First sighting of queen bee Aishwarya and predictably, like Vidya with her Sabyasachi sarees, Aishwarya went with her designer of choice – Elie Saab.  This year she opted for an Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring 2013 dress with spot-on hair and makeup.  Looking through the archives, here are some of the other Elie Saab outfits she’s worn at Cannes in previous years.  Question is, is this one the best or she still needs to top it?

We’ve seen Aishwarya‘s Cannes ensembles, whether it is the blue Gucci Premiere gown or the latest gold Tarun Tahiliani saree.  The latter made her look like a Filmfare statue award while satin is never flattering on a woman with a less than stick-thin body.  Which brings me to the question of when will she know what works for her body?  None of the gowns flattered, especially not the Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla muumuu that made her look like a tent.  Probably the worst of the lot was the pantsuit!  The saree at least was draped well and accentuated her curves.  But if there was one outfit that truly stood out and made her look the best, it was the white Saint Laurent blouse and black Zac Posen skirt.  It cinched her in the waist and gave her a beautiful hourglass figure.  Now, why couldn’t she have dressed like this always??

I honestly think she should have ditched everything and worn a Zac Posen gown one after the other.  Here are a few of my picks.

What happened to Mallika’s winning streak?  Someone has a vendetta against her to put her in this ashy colored, ill-fitting Dolce and Gabbana gown that, dare I say, makes her look matronly!  Even the hair, makeup and jewelry seem to be an after-thought.  Poor woman, does not look happy.  If I had the chance, I’d have to put her in one of Katie Ermilio’s (one of my favs) gorgeous gowns.

I’m frankly not a fan of the 7th anniversary cover of Marie Claire.  Perhaps its the black gown paired with the black gym shorts.  The only plus was the gorgeous necklace, alas that was ruined by an avalanche of hair.

Vogue’s darling Sonam is on the June cover but this time, I have to say it is a wonderful choice.  We get not one, but two covers and both are equally stunning.  My only teeny preference would be the shots where she’s not gleefully laughing, but then again, that’s just a personal preference.
